The Duke Of Christmas

A 2017 KTM Duke 390

My daughter and her husband had sold their motorbikes over a year ago. Being students, they lacked the time and funds to use and keep them, but they were missed. And I missed riding with them.

So, when a used dealer demo KTM Duke 390 turned up on a trading platform, I went for a look and test drive together with my son-in-law. My daughter couldn’t come as she was a bit under the weather. Still, the choice of this model has a lot to do with her, as she has a A2 license and this bike is tailored to the restrictions of that license. It makes full use of the maximum legal power to weight ratio.

Comes with a phablet-sized display.

For the 2017 model year, KTM ironed out some kinks and thoroughly modernized this already very popular bike. The display is one selling point, it arranges all relevant informations neatly and connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth. You can take calls and click through your playlists by manipulating the handlebar controls.

Got a bit dirty. Aw, come on, it's a KTM!

Our test ride proved that the bike is more than a Bluetooth device. A lively, 44 HP, single-cylinder motor, 140 kg dry weight and well-mannered suspension make for a flickable, mountain-bike-like ride. Brakes are ByBre (by Brembo, made in their Indian subsidiary, as the whole bike is made in India. BTW, there this 373 cc bike is considered a big sportsbike. There are lots of reviews of this bike on YouTube that come from India and they’re all interesting for their different perspective and the exotic (for us) surroundings. But I digress and before this becomes a piece of LISP code, I’ll better close the last one: ), they are strong and controllable. There are two color versions, the tank shrouds on the other one are fluorescent orange, too. We preferred the white one!
The test ride was positive except for the GPS on my BMW acting up and leading us on little muddy single lanes. Or perhaps it was in the KTM’s DNA!
My son-in-law liked the KTM Duke 390 and so I got it for them as a Christmas present, but I’m afraid I’ll have to ride it a few times before handing it over.

  1. I had a 2015 Duke 125 and always thought that once I get a bigger bike this would be in the short list, they are fantastic bikes and the engines are brilliant! I hope they liked their Christmas present… how is it fairing now?

  2. apologies, i did not see that you posted this 10 hours ago… once they’ve had it a while you must do a progress review haha.
